Andrew Varelas

  • 1st Year Trainee - Physical Therapy

Andrew Varelas is a second-year student in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of Pittsburgh. He is an alumnus of the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, graduating with a B.S. in Medical Biology in 2011. Andrew explored several careers in between his formal schooling; spending time in non-profits, education, science, and health care. Experiences at a summer camp for children with life-threatening illnesses and at a school for children with special needs combined to lead Andrew into the field of physical therapy, where he hopes to continue to help youth achieve goals and gain independence.

During his year as a LEND trainee, Andrew hopes to become a stronger advocate by gaining knowledge of procedures, resources, and laws affecting children and their families. He has been motivated by team-based approaches in past positions and looks forward to working on multidisciplinary teams throughout the year. Andrew is also looking forward to learning how to adapt his leadership style and enhance his communication skills as he begins to establish himself in the field of physical therapy.
