Shelby Crawford

  • 1st Year Trainee - Speech Language Pathology

Shelby Crawford is a second year Speech-Language Pathology student in the Master’s program in the University of Pittsburgh’s Communication Science and Disorders department. She graduated in 2016 from Towson University with her Bachelor’s degree in the same field of study. Her interest in speech-language pathology was sparked at a young age, as her mother pursued the same career path. This interest further developed when Shelby nannied for a child with a language disorder and realized the incredible impact Speech-Language Pathologists can have on the quality of life of the individuals they serve.

Throughout her time as a graduate student, Shelby has been placed in several clinical settings working with a variety of patients with disabilities. These settings include a public elementary school, an acute care adult hospital, an inpatient adult rehabilitation center, and an inpatient pediatric rehabilitation center. All settings provided opportunities to observe and engage in interdisciplinary clinical practice, a crucial component of the LEND program.

Shelby is thrilled to take part in what the LEND program has to offer. She hopes to gain a better understanding of family-centered care and advocacy in relation to children with disabilities and their families. She is eager to work with other professionals and further develop her leadership skills as a trainee. She expects this training to carry over into her future career aspiration to be a school speech-language pathologist for children with special needs.
