Chelsea L. Gessner, M.A. is a third-year Clinical Psychology Doctoral Trainee at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She completed her undergraduate education at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY, where she majored in Psychology. At Marist, she earned leadership certification from the National Society of Leadership and Success and became a member of the International Honor Society in Psychology (Psi Chi). She was awarded a Marist College research grant for her Honors Thesis on Emotion Regulation and Cognitive Task Performance, before graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2015. Post-college, Ms. Gessner worked on an NIH-funded research grant at the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research for four years, where she collected data for the study of normative variation in brain-behavior relationships across the lifespan. Ms. Gessner’s passion for the needs of children with developmental and intellectual disabilities began at a very young age, when her cousin, Alexa, was born with mosaic trisomy 9p, a rare chromosomal disorder. However, it was not just her cousin’s cognitive and behavioral challenges that troubled Ms. Gessner, but the number of health professionals her family sought, before finding one that truly understood the intricacies of Alexa’s condition. Since entering doctoral school, Ms. Gessner has developed an interest in psychological assessment and plans to specialize in neuropsychological assessment in the future. She wishes to someday ensure competent neuropsychological assessment of persons with disabilities, using measures designed to accommodate the complexity of diverse conditions.
